Chitambo Mothers’ Shelter Receives Solar Geysers, Central Province (2025)
At Chitambo Hospital, mothers waited for delivery without hot water. Today, solar geysers provide comfort and hygiene during their wait.
In 2025, Engineers Without Borders Zambia supported Chitambo District Hospital in Central Province by improving amenities at the new Mothers’ Waiting Shelter. This facility allows expectant mothers from remote areas to stay near the hospital before delivery, helping to improve maternal health outcomes. The shelter serves up to 400 expectant mothers and escorts per month, some of whom travel up to 160 km on foot to reach the hospital. The facility includes 20 beds, 4 showers, 4 toilets, and 8 sinks, with occasional overflow handled in the adjacent Post Maternal Ward.
Working in collaboration with Friends of Chitambo, EWB-Zambia engineers assessed donated solar geyser units intended for the shelter. Since the units were not functional, the team acquired new hybrid solar geysers and oversaw their installation and commissioning. Installation was completed in May 2025 following assessment and replacement of the original units. These systems now provide hot running water for bathing and cleaning, enhancing both comfort and sanitation for mothers during their stay.
In October 2025, EWB Zambia conducted a follow-up visit. Mothers and escorters described the hot water as a first-time experience, significantly improving comfort and hygiene. The project highlights the importance of simple, sustainable technology. Following positive feedback, hospital staff are eager to replicate the system in other parts of the facility, including a planned expansion of the shelter.
