Climate Change Education Outreach, Chikankata District (2024)
Young minds in Chikankata are driving change in their school and community to tackle climate change and shape a greener future.
In 2024, Engineers Without Borders Zambia introduced the “Empowering Young Minds” outreach initiative at Nanduba Secondary School in Chikankata District, Southern Province. The program was developed in response to limited student exposure to climate science, sustainability, and practical engineering solutions, aiming to strengthen STEM education and inspire youth-led environmental action.
Working alongside Forestry Department Technician Henry Zulu and Pamela Matteo, EWB-Zambia volunteers led a session in May 2024 that featured interactive talks, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities. The Forestry Department donated seedlings valued at ZMW 20,000, allowing students to engage directly in tree planting as a way to apply their learning. The initiative not only raised awareness about local environmental challenges but also highlighted how engineering can contribute to climate resilience and community development. Following the outreach event, Nanduba Secondary School established a Climate Change Club with support from EWB-Zambia. The club has since taken on projects in tree planting, waste recycling, and environmental monitoring, becoming a platform for ongoing student engagement. As a volunteer-driven, low-cost program, “Empowering Young Minds” has gained support from local education authorities and stands as a model for advancing STEM education and sustainable development in the region.
