Miyoba Solar Water Project, Monze District (2023)

In Miyoba Village, students used to walk for over an hour each day for water. Today, clean water flows on their school grounds.

At Miyoba Community School in Monze District, Southern Province, children and teachers relied on shallow, unprotected water sources prone to contamination. During rainy seasons, outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases were common. Students walked over 1 km, taking up to an hour, each day to fetch water. This not only exposed them to health risks but also led to significant loss of learning time.

“Before, we studied 4–5 hours. Now we learn 7–8 hours because
we no longer need to walk for water.” – Pupil, grade 7

In 2023, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Zambia carried out its inaugural project at Miyoba Primary School. Working closely with community leaders, school authorities, and local education officials, the team installed a solar-powered water system with three outlets: one for drinking, one for sanitation (latrine use), and one for irrigation.

The system currently serves over 434 students, 17 staff, and more than 1,800 surrounding community members. Its impact is far-reaching, with improved hygiene, reduced absenteeism, and more time in class, particularly benefiting young girls. The system has also supported a school garden that contributes to daily meals, enhances nutrition, and generates small income through surplus sales. Additionally, the project has created economic opportunities for local youth, including employment in small-scale brick production, benefiting 5 to 10 individuals. Developed with strong local participation and ownership, the initiative stands as a sustainable model that the community is eager to replicate in other schools across the area.
